Toulouse University Computing Center
TOULOUSE,
with a population of approximately 350 000, is the fourth-largest
French city. However, it ranks second for the number of students (80 000)
in three universities and many colleges of higher education. Teaching
includes a broad range of subjects: law, medecine, humanities, literature,
economics, and science.
The different institutions have their own computing facilities
(micro-computers, workstations and mini mainframes) which are used either
in laboratories for research or in lecture rooms for teaching purposes.
Toulouse universities in conjuction with some of the colleges have set up a
computing centre in order to share expensive tools as well as their
knowledge and expertise in computing.
This computing centre is called CICT.
CICT (Centre Interuniversitaire de
Calcul de Toulouse) provides additional
facilities including servers, networks, and software. It also focuses on
training, advice, and consulting.
Networks
CICT manages interconnected networks:
- An ATM local area network used for the connection of mainframes.
- An Ethernet local area network used for the connection of mainframes,
workstations and X Window terminals.
- An X25 network linked to the public network TRANSPAC.
CICT is in charge of the TCP/IP Rangueil Campus Network which
interconnect various Ethernet LANs.
CICT, along with France Telecom, is in charge of ReMiP, a TCP/IP
interconnection network for public research centres in the Midi-Pyrenees
region. ReMiP is linked to the Internet, the international communications
network.
Servers
CICT has several Unix servers:
- A CD 9460 MP (SGI Challenge L), a 4 processor server running IRIX 5.3,
(corail.cict.fr),
- A 4 processor SS1000 from Sun with two 5*10 Gbytes Exabyte stackers, two
7*10 Gbytes stackers and a 32*1,2 Gbyte optical disc juke
box, operated by Aria. This machine is a mail, NFS, WWW, FTP,
backup and archive server
(oceane.cict.fr),
- A HP 9000/755 for graphics applications (lagon.cict.fr),
- A HP 9000/819 K200 (4 HP PA-RISC 7200 processor)
(boreale.cict.fr),
- A HP 9000/867S dedicated to videotex and DBMS
(ecume.cict.fr),
- An anonymous HP ftp server
(hpux.cict.fr),
- A few dedicated network servers (news.cict.fr, mbone.cict.fr).
Areas of use
CICT provides to its users a wide range of software and equipment in
various fields of computing:
- Programming: FORTRAN, C, C++, Pascal, Cobol, Ada, Prolog, etc.
- DBMS: Oracle, Texto
- Mathematics and computational analysis: Nag, Matlab, Reduce, Modulef,
Mathematica, Mechanica, I-DEAS,...
- Statistics: SAS, SPSS, SPlus,...
- Graphics: UNIRAS, X terminals
- Printing: TeX, a XEROX 4850 laser printer, a ColorQ laser printer
- Videotex
Services
CICT trains people for computer and software use; it also provides advice,
assistance, and consulting. It can see to hardware problems.
CICT develops tailor-made applications and participates in local and
national users' group activities.
